Fireworks & Pyrotechnics — frequently asked questions

Are fireworks allowed at a wedding in Italy?
Not without permission, and permission is not the whole story. Article 57 of Italy’s public security law requires a licence from the local public security authority before fireworks are set off — and it then places the display itself out of bounds in an inhabited place, its surroundings, or along or towards a public road. A villa in open countryside is a different proposition from a property on the edge of a town.
Who obtains the authorisation?
The pyrotechnics company normally applies, because the licence is tied to qualified operators and the specific site and date. Your job is to confirm, in writing, that it has been granted before you pay a balance — not to assume it. Ask to see the authorisation, and ask who is responsible if it is refused late.
How far ahead do we need to arrange it?
Earlier than most couples expect, because the permission is a public authority process rather than a booking. Raise it with the venue and the supplier as soon as you have a date, and treat a refusal as a realistic outcome to plan around. Also confirm the venue permits fireworks at all — many historic properties do not.
Are there places where fireworks will not be permitted?
Frequently. Historic buildings, properties with dry surrounding land in high summer, and protected landscapes all carry restrictions. Val d'Orcia is a managed World Heritage area where what may be erected, lit or set off outdoors is regulated. Ask before it becomes part of the plan, not after.
What are the alternatives?
Sparklers, controlled cold-spark indoor effects, drone light displays and lantern-lit garden lighting are all used in Tuscany. They are not equivalent, but several need no public security licence, and some venues that refuse fireworks permit them. Ask your venue which of them it allows before you choose.
