Wedding Venues — frequently asked questions

Can we be legally married at the venue?
Often not, and the venue does not decide — the comune does. Of twenty-six venues we checked, only two say on their own site. Villa Le Fontanelle states that civil ceremonies must be arranged with the City of Florence; Borgo Sant'Ambrogio says ceremonies there can be civil, Catholic or symbolic. Greve in Chianti names private villas in its own list of ceremony venues, and Lucca publishes a rate for approved historic ones. Florence does neither.
Why does no venue publish a price?
Because the quote is built per couple from guest count, season, day of the week, how much of the property you take and for how long. Of the twenty-six venues on this site, not one publishes a wedding price on its own site. The only figure any of them published there was a €20 per person wine tasting. A third-party directory occasionally carries a number, but the properties themselves expect you to enquire.
How do I know if a venue fits my guest list?
Ask for three numbers, not one: seated for dinner, standing for the reception, and sleeping on the property. They are usually different. Only eight of the twenty-six venues here publish any capacity at all. Seated, they run from 30 at a historic relais to 180 in a single orangery — but the one venue that also gives a standing figure puts it at 400 against 150 seated.
Can we bring our own caterer?
It depends on the property, and it decides your largest budget line. Three models exist: in-house kitchen, an approved list, or open to your own supplier. Among the venues we checked, only Tenuta I Bonsi describes an open arrangement — its kitchen is available either to its long-standing partner or to any caterer you choose. Ask in the first email.
What does exclusive use actually include?
Ask precisely: exclusive of what, from what hour on what day until what hour, and is anyone else on the property during those hours. Some venues mean the whole estate with every bedroom; others mean the event spaces while other guests occupy the rooms, or while the gardens keep their normal visiting hours.
What happens if it rains?
Ask to see the wet-weather space rather than be told it exists, and establish four things: whether it seats your full guest list, whether using it costs extra, when the decision must be made on the day, and who makes it. October is the second-wettest month of the year in Florence, so for an autumn date this is a requirement, not a formality.
