Helicopter Charter — frequently asked questions

Can a helicopter land at our wedding venue?
Sometimes. Italian rules allow occasional landing sites — any area that is, in the pilot’s judgement, of a size suitable for occasional take-off and landing. Before using one the pilot has to overfly it and check that the landing area is at least one and a half times the distance between the helicopter’s extreme points with the rotors turning, that the ground and gradient will take it, that obstacles and people are clear, and that the manoeuvre will not overfly houses or crowds.
Whose permission do we need?
On private land the owner’s consent is required, so the venue has to agree — get it in writing. On land belonging to the State or a public body, a nulla osta or a concession to use the area is needed instead. The pilot is solely responsible for choosing the area and for how the operation is flown, and the regulation is explicit that it does not exempt anyone from other authorities’ rules, national or local.
Is there a limit on how often it can be used?
Yes. The occasional-landing regime covers operators carrying out occasional aerial activity not exceeding 100 movements a year, in daytime visual flight conditions. That is a limit on the site and operator rather than on your wedding, but it is why a property cannot simply become a helipad because a couple would like one.
Is it practical, or just impressive?
It can be genuinely practical — Val d'Orcia and southern Tuscany are a long drive from both main airports, and a transfer by air removes hours. But it has to be planned around daylight, weather and the landowner's agreement, and it is a poor fallback: if conditions are wrong on the day, there needs to be a car.
