Do we need childcare at a destination wedding?
More than at a wedding at home. An Italian wedding day is long — an afternoon ceremony, an aperitif, a dinner that starts late — and children who have flown in are usually jet-lagged as well as tired. Organised entertainment keeps them occupied and lets their parents actually attend the wedding.
What should we ask a provider?
How many staff per child, what ages they cover, whether they are insured, what happens as the evening gets late, and where they will be based — a separate room or shaded area matters. Ask whether they provide food or whether that goes through your caterer, and confirm they speak a language your children understand.
When is the difficult part of the day?
The dinner, almost always. The ceremony holds attention and the aperitif is outdoors, but a long seated meal starting at eight in the evening is where small children run out of patience. Plan for that specific window rather than the whole day, and agree with the venue where children can go.
What about the heat?
Take it seriously in July and August, when Florence averages a daily maximum above 32°C. Children in formal clothes in direct sun for an afternoon ceremony is a genuinely bad combination. Ask for shade, water and an indoor option, and consider whether a later ceremony would suit everyone, not only the children.
