Lucca is the most administratively straightforward place in Tuscany to get married. It publishes its fees in full, it authorises historic villas for the legal ceremony at a known price, and it is twenty minutes from an airport. It is also walled, flat and unusually pleasant to be a guest in — with one week of the year that has to be avoided.

Most Tuscan comuni make you ask. Lucca publishes a full tariff table, split by venue, by day and by residency.
At Palazzo Orsetti, non-residents pay €480 for a weekday morning, €720 for a weekday afternoon, €900 on a Saturday morning and €1,000 on a Saturday afternoon. Residents pay between nothing and €180 for the same slots — Wednesday mornings are free for them.
The practical value of this is that you can plan a Lucca wedding with real numbers a year out, rather than waiting on an email. Very few places in Tuscany allow that.
Lucca runs a programme it calls "Sì in villa", under which civil ceremonies may be celebrated in approved historic villas — at published rates.
For non-residents: €700–1,000 on weekdays and €1,250 at weekends and on holidays. Residents pay €300–450 and €750 respectively.
This matters more than the money. In Florence, private villas are frequently not authorised for the legal ceremony at all — Villa Le Fontanelle states that civil marriages must be arranged with the City of Florence. In Lucca, the ceremony and the celebration can happen in the same place, and you can see the price before you enquire. Greve in Chianti is the other comune we found that does this.
One deadline to note: Lucca asks for the publication request "at least 3 months before" the wedding date.
Lucca Comics & Games runs from 28 October to 1 November 2026, and in a normal year occupies the end of October and the start of November.
It is the largest pop culture festival in Europe by attendance — a million tickets over the last five editions, 700 exhibitors — and the organisers describe hundreds of thousands of visitors flooding the centre of Lucca. For those five days the walled city is full, the hotels are gone, and ordinary movement through the centre is not possible.
An October wedding in Lucca is a good idea. An October wedding in Lucca during that week is not. Check the year's dates before you fix yours.
Pisa's Galileo Galilei airport is the closest of Tuscany's two main airports, and Lucca is on the rail line from it. Florence is the alternative, a little further.
Within the city, Lucca is the easiest Tuscan town for guests to handle: it is walled, flat, compact and famously walkable — the tree-lined path on top of the Renaissance walls circles the whole centre. Nobody needs a car, and older guests will find it much gentler going than Siena's ridges or Florence's crowds.
As in any Tuscan historic centre, vehicle access is restricted. Arrange it through the hotel or venue rather than assuming.
The regional pattern applies: July and August driest and hottest, May and early June most comfortable, September and October progressively wetter, with October the second-wettest month in the Tuscan record. Our best months guide has the figures.
Lucca's own calendar adds two considerations: the Comics festival at the end of October, and a busy summer season of concerts and events in and around the city. Neither is a reason to avoid a month — both are a reason to check the specific week.
Palazzo Orsetti and the comune's rooms, for the ceremony, at published prices.
The Lucchese villas — the historic country houses in the hills north of the city, several of which the comune has approved for ceremonies under "Sì in villa". Formal gardens, historic interiors, and the rare combination of a legal ceremony and a reception in one place.
Palazzi and historic interiors within the walls, for smaller dinners.
Estates and agriturismi in the surrounding countryside and towards the coast.
The venues guide covers what to ask; the cost guide has the full comparison of comune fees.
The figures, rules and deadlines on this page come from these — comuni, regional bodies and official registers, not other wedding sites. Rules change; confirm anything you are about to act on.

Tuscany is not one place, and the eleven areas couples usually choose between suit genuinely different weddings. This page is a way of deciding rather than a ranking: the four questions that actually separate the areas, and what each one means for the day you are planning. The detail for each area lives on its own page.
Read guideAlmost every figure you will read about Tuscany wedding costs is someone's estimate presented as a fact. This page takes a different approach. It sets out the costs that are genuinely published — town hall fees, stamp duties, consular charges, all of them sourced and linked — and then explains, without inventing numbers, how the quotes for everything else are built and what moves them. It is less tidy than a price list. It is also true.
Read guideMost of the paperwork for an Italian wedding comes down to one question: can the registrar see proof that nothing in your own country's law prevents you from marrying? That proof is called a nulla osta, and where you get it depends entirely on which passport you hold. This page sets out the steps in the order you will meet them, and says clearly where the answer depends on your own embassy and the particular town hall.
Read guideMost wedding checklists are built around a generic timeline. This one is built around the deadlines that actually exist in Italy — the notice periods comuni publish, the expiry dates on consular documents, and the handful of things that can only be done in person. Where a date is fixed by an authority, it is sourced. Where it is judgement, it says so.
